Second Grade

"In music the passions enjoy themselves." - Friedrich Nietzsche

Second grade music will focus on basic rhythm, pitch-matching, listening and analyzing skills, along with learning about the orchestral instrument families, basic composers, and ensemble performances.  Activites will include singing, dancing, movement (gross and fine motor skills), playing instruments, reading poems and stories, composition, writing/drawing, and music related games.A typical 40 minute class consists of:

1.  A greeting or echo song as the class comes in.
2.  A rhythm warm-up focusing on steady beat and proper divisions of the beat.
3.  A vocal warm-up exercise that addresses matching pitch, voice placement, melodic direction and proper breath support.
4.  The lesson/focus part of class, where the main musical skill or concept is addressed in a variety of activities (singing songs, playing instruments, large and fine motor movements and games).
5.  A song, used for assessing matching pitch, tone, vocal technique, or a classroom concept or season.

6.  An instrument circle activity using the instrument for the week
