First Grade

"Music is... a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy"- Ludwig Van Beethoven​


 

First grade music will focus on appropriate music room behaviors and basic rhythm, pitch-matching, listening and analyzing skills.  Activites will include singing, dancing, movement (gross and fine motor skills), playing instruments, reading poems and stories, composition, writing/drawing, and music related games.



A typical 40 minute 1st grade class follows this schedule:

1.  A greeting song

2.  A "roll-call" activity that includes responding to spoken or sung names
3.  A warm-up activity focusing on basic rhythms and solfege

4.  Lesson activity focusing on the concept/skill of the day
5.  A group game or activity that reinforces the concept/skill of the day.

6.  An instrument circle activity

7.  A singing activity; either learning a new song, singing a previously learned song or playing a singing game. 

8.  A movement activity or group game focusing on beat, rhythm and/or dynamics
9.  A good-bye/line-up song
